The authorities of the Krāslava district have erased to the ground the military burial site of Soviet soldiers which was situated in the village of Skaune. They ordered to bulldozer the memorial and commemorative plates despite the fact that the remains of the people perished in the Second World War are buried there.

The decision and the act is a direct violation of the law on demolotion of monuments itseld as it clearly states that monuments located on the burial sites are not to be destroyed. Besides, the ruling politicians of Latvia promised not to target the individual graves and the burial sites. However, to all apperances, the authorities do not see any bounds in their zest to vandalise.
