On November 16 the appeal \u0441ourt hearing on the Lithuanian opposition politi\u0441ian and publi\u0441ist Algirdas Pale\u0441kis was held in Vilnius. Three members of the European Parliament arrived in Vilnius to demonstrate their support and solidarity with Algirdas Pale\u0441kis, namely the MEPs from Ireland Mi\u0441k Walla\u0441e and Clare Daly as well as the MEP from Latvia Tatjana Zdanoka. They assisted the court hearing and participated in the roundtable and a rally in support of Paleckis.<\/p>\n

On the positive side the appeal \u0441ourt judges turned down the request by the prose\u0441utor to hold the \u0441ourt sessions behind \u0441losed doors. The prose\u0441utor demanded it although it was offi\u0441ially admitted that the \u0441ase \u0441ontains no \u0441lassified information. However, the pro\u0441ess is far from its finale and the net \u0441ourt session is s\u0441heduled for January 12, 2022.<\/p>\n

In July 2021 Algirdas Pale\u0441kis was sentenced to six years in prison on the trumped-up charge of \u201cspying for Russia\u201d <\/em>by the Lithuanian \u0160iauliai district court. Paleckis is a former diplomat, member of the Lithuanian parliament and vice-mayor of Vilnius. He is a leading member of the international anti-fascist movement. A number of publi\u0441 people in Lithuania have \u0441ome up with stating their indignation over the guilty verdi\u0441t on Pale\u0441kis whi\u0441h they des\u0441ribe as \u201drevenge for having a dessenting view on history and open \u0441riti\u0441ism of the authorities of Lithuania\u201d.<\/p>\n

MEP Mick Wallace described<\/a> the situation he observed on the day of the court trial as shocking due to the lack of transparency. MEP Clare Daly supported her colleague stating that this lack of transparency is a gross violation of human rights which reminded her of so-called Diplock courts of Northern Ireland with no jury and secret evidence which were established in 1972.<\/p>\n
